Visiting the Castles of Abruzzo leads to the discovery of the landscapes and historic houses which, thanks to their perfect preservation, fascinate and remind us of ancient times. Abruzzo boasts the largest number of castles in Italy, so much so that it has earned the well-deserved nickname of "Museum en plein air". From the coast to the mountains, among rocks overhanging the sea, on gentle hills or in the midst of thick woods, the Region is rich in architectural works dating back to the Middle Ages and built for defensive purposes.
Which castles to see
- Castel Menardo, on the Ciumino hill in the locality of Serramonacesca, can be reached through a demanding walk, crossing the passes of the Majella and Val Pescara.
- The imposing Castle of Rocca Calasciobuilt in 1200 at an altitude of 1500 metres, which with its austere and symmetrical forms dominates the entire valley.
- A few kilometres from our hotel, in Loreto Aprutino, there is the Castello Chiola, today a luxurious restaurant for ceremonies, built in 864 on a rocky hill; over the centuries it has hosted saints, warriors and noble families.
- At Torre dei Passeri you can admire the Gizi Castlewhich is spread over four levels: the first are dedicated to the conservation of agricultural products, while the remaining ones are dedicated to residence and representation.
