The mountains of the park
The Gran Sasso National Park, established in 1991, includes 44 municipalities in Abruzzoin which several mountain groups blend harmoniously, including the Gran Sasso chain, the Monti della Laga and the Gemelli mountains, in which the Corno Grande massif touches 3,000 metres in height, including the only perennial glacier in the region, the Calderone.
Rocks of white dolomite alternate with caves, bottlenecks and plateaus such as the wide and more majestic Campo Imperatore, which during the winter season offers fresh snow and ski lifts for all winter sports enthusiasts.
Laga Mountains
The Gran Sasso National Park also includes the chain of Monti della Laga, characterized by sandstone and limestone mountains that give the peaks a unique rounded shape, which slides on two sides different in climate and shape, until you reach valleys furrowed between the rocks. The particular conformity of the Laga Mountains means that the water of the torrents descends with force along the valleys, forming spectacular and fascinating waterfalls.
The largest lake in Abruzzo
The Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park is home to Abruzzo's largest lake, the Lake CampotostoA place where the beauty of the luxuriant nature, at times wild and arid, blends with the historical and artistic wonders of the medieval villages.
